September is National Suicide Awareness Month and we decided we wanted to take a step beyond just
talking about suicide awareness and prevention on social media. We want to create something that
helps start the conversation out there in our communities, too!
The semicolon is often associated with suicide awareness. A semicolon is used when an author could’ve
chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. In the reference to suicide prevention, the author is you
and the sentence is your life.
Our Assistant Director, Jessica, created this beautiful design to incorporate her love of climbing and her
endless advocacy for suicide awareness. Like many of us, Jessica has lost important people to suicide
and, like some of us, has also survived a suicide attempt. This design represents the struggles we face on
and off the rock. Both can be hard, physically and mentally but it’s important to not give up and to keep
going…keep climbing!
The intention of the design was to represent the people who’ve helped us along the way or whom we’ve lost to suicide, with the quick draws on the rock. Because of them, we’re able to keep moving up! The climber represents a place we’ve all been…going through a difficult part of life but still hanging on and still moving forward. The rock- well that’s life. It’s hard, can be scary, and takes work and support to get through. The sun is hope, energy, and something to climb toward! Overall, this creates the semicolon. We hope the design sparks conversation and allows us to talk about our passion of climbing and/or talk about suicide awareness. The more we talk about suicide the less stigma it holds and you never know, one conversation about a shirt could potentially make someone feel comfortable enough to reach out for help or inspired enough to hold on one more day.
